An Item Response Modeling Approach to Cognitive Load Measurement

چکیده

The accurate measurement of the cognitive load a learner encounters in given task is critical to understanding and application Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). However, as covert psychological construct, represents challenging issue. To date, this challenge has been met mostly by subjective self-reports experienced learning situation. In paper, we find that valid reliable index can be obtained through item response modeling student performance. Specifically, estimates derived from relative difficulty (i.e., difference between person ability locations) function linear measure combines key components mental load, effort, performance). This ( difficulty) was tested for criterion (concurrent) validity Year 2 learners N = 91) performance on standardized educational numeracy literacy assessments. Learners’ working memory (WM) capacity significantly predicted our proposed (relative across both domains. That is, higher levels WM were related lower difficulty), line with fundamental predictions CLT. These results illustrate validity, utility potential objective approach capturing individual differences discrete tasks.

Evaluating Social Influence Relations: An Item-Response-Modeling Approach

Subject of this paper is the measurement of social influence in social networks. The theoretical point of departure is twofold. First, focus is on cognitive processing of perceived influence. Second, three distinct dimensions of social influence are considered: persuasion, authority and coercion. Combining these considerations with Item Response Theory methods, questionnaire-type measurement in...

Improving measurement in health education and health behavior research using item response modeling: introducing item response modeling.

This paper is the first of several papers designed to demonstrate how the application of item response models in the behavioral sciences can be used to enhance the conceptual and technical toolkit of researchers and developers and to understand better the psychometric properties of psychosocial measures. The papers all use baseline data from the Behavior Change Consortium data archive. This pap...

Cognitive Code: An Embedded Approach to Cognitive Modeling

For several decades, production systems have been the dominant framework in which (primarily) symbolic cognitive models have been developed. This paper proposes a different approach, cognitive code, in which behavioral models are developed directly in a modern programming language. However, unlike standard code, cognitive code has simulated timing and error characteristics intended to mimic tho...

A Geometrical Approach to Item Response Theory

How critical is the concept of the latent trait to modern test theory ? The appeal to some unobservable characteristic modulating response probability can lead to some confusion and misunderstanding among users of psychometric technology. This paper looks at a geometric formulation of item response theory that avoids the need to appeal to unobservables. It draws on concepts in differential geom...

Generalizability in Item Response Modeling

An approach called generalizability in item response modeling (GIRM) is introduced in this article. The GIRM approach essentially incorporates the sampling model of generalizability theory (GT) into the scaling model of item response theory (IRT) by making distributional assumptions about the relevant measurement facets. By specifying a random effects measurement model, and taking advantage of ...
